Dessert with Chateau Ste Michelle

I don’t know about you, but I still get excited about the mail.  Especially when there’s a box waiting on my doorstep when I get home from work.  And when I open that box and find three bottles of wine in it.

The kind folks at Chateau Ste Michelle offered to send me their Dry Riesling, Columbia Valley Riesling and Harvest Select Sweet Riesling.

I didn’t want to be selfish and drink these wines all by myself. Also, I’m pretty sure drinking three bottles of wine by myself would point to a problem.  Anyways, I invited a few neighbors over, popped open the wine and made dessert.  Two, in fact.

Riesling Poached Pears

I don’t like to drink sweet wine, but they are fantastic for making dessert.  That was my plan for the Harvest Select Sweet Riesling.

A juicy, sweeter style balanced by crisp acidity.  Rich and round with ripe pear and floral notes.

Having never poached pears before, I wasn’t sure how this would work out, but they were delicious.  After poaching, I reduced the poaching liquid to become a syrup over the pears.  The flavor of the Riesling really stood out in the syrup and complemented the pears very well.

Reviews from the tasters:

Delicious!

Amazing!

To be honest, not a dessert that I would typically order, but that will now change—loved it!

To start off, we cracked open the dry Riesling.

Dry style with fruit forward notes of white peach and apricot with a mineral finish.

Reviews from the tasters:

This dry Riesling is sweeter than I thought it would be, being labeled “dry” but I enjoyed the flavor.

I’m usually not a Riesling fan, but this one was exceptionally good.

This dry Riesling is very refreshing and paired nicely with the fig tart.

Next, we moved on to the Columbia Valley Riesling.

Crisp and refreshing in the off dry style with notes of sweet line, peach and subtle minerality.

Reviews from the tasters:

Bland – I usually don’t like anything but dry Rieslings, and this is surprisingly not sweet.  However, I find it to be surprisingly bland, which is not something I look for in a wine.

Thought it was refreshing, liked that the taste did not linger.

This Riesling is not very sweet but lacks any significant flavor.

Overall, the dry Riesling was the crowd favorite and I can’t wait to pick up a few bottles!  We had a lot of fun tasting wine and eating dessert on a Thursday night, thanks very much, Chateau Ste Michelle!

What’s your favorite type of wine?

Have you ever made a dessert with wine?

Chateau Ste Michelle provided me with three bottles of wine to review.  All opinions are my own.
