Everyone has a meal that they can fall back on when all else fails. For me, tacos are that type of meal. I almost always have the ingredients on hand—ground meat in the freezer, salsa in the fridge {or I whip up my own quick & easy salsa}, avocado, cheese tomatoes and if we’re lucky, sour cream {or Greek yogurt} and cilantro.
Last week I went to make tacos for dinner and found that I didn’t have a packet of taco seasoning. So I improvised with what I had on hand. Why would I bother buying packets of taco seasoning when it’s so simple to make at home? I just can’t believe it took me this long!
{Taco Seasoning}
Ingredients
- 4 Tablespoons chili powder
- 1 Tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 Tablespoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon ancho chile powder
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 2 teaspoons sea salt
- 2 teaspoons black pepper
Method
In a bowl, combine all ingredients. Mix well. Store in an air tight container.
To prepare taco meat, brown 1 pound of ground meat of your choice {turkey, bison or beef}. Drain off any rendered fat then add 1 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of the seasoning to the meat. Allow to simmer until the sauce has thickened.
Not only did this seasoning blend taste better than the store-bought packet, but I know each and every ingredient that went into it. What could be better?
Enjoy!

Nice! I buy the taco packets but they are high in sodium. Should make my own – tacos are our fall back, too!
