Happy Half Birthday, Sweet Pea!

by Lisa on February 10, 2012

Today is a big day.  Caroline is six months old! Half of a year has passed since she came into the world.  It doesn’t even seem possible.

We  may have had a little party this morning.

This past month has marked a lot of changes in Caroline.  While she has always been a quietly observant baby, now she is curious about everything.  She reaches out to grab anything and everything within a twelve inch radius.  She’s becoming more resourceful about grabbing things, if she’s doing tummy time and can’t reach a toy she wants she will grab the blanket and pull it towards her to get the toy.  This is probably completely normal for her age, but I find it to be incredible.

She starts laughing hysterically every time she sees Dixie and gets very frustrated when we won’t let her grab Dixie’s fur.

She can sit up by herself and roll from back to front.

She’s tried more fruits and vegetables.  So far, she hasn’t found one that she doesn’t like.  Her babbling is becoming more distinct sounds.

She still has trouble with napping but she sleeps through the night so we’re not concerned.

I was nervous that when I went back to work Caroline’s happy disposition would change, but as it turns out, I had nothing to worry about.  This kid can’t stop smiling.

I really can’t believe that it’s been half a year since we met this sweet little girl of ours.

Caroline, we love you more than words can describe and we feel so lucky to have you for our daughter.

Happy Half Birthday, Sweet Pea.

So cute! It's amazing how fast they grow. My bubba is on his way to his 4-month birthday, so it's really exciting to read about how much other babies change in the next few months to come.

Also, she's completely adorable!

Thanks, Jamie! My mom always made a big deal out of our half birthdays so I’m just keeping the tradition going :-) We also went in when she woke up singing Happy Half Birthday :-) And we made a video of it. It’s true, we’re crazy.

Just found your blog today! Happy Birthday to your little one. Our little one will be 6 months next Thursday! Oh the joys. Just curious when you started foods (we haven't yet) and if you have any tips on getting a baby to sleep through the night?!?

Hi Erika, welcome! We started solids at 4 months old. Caroline was ready and hungry. She had been sleeping through the night but started waking up hungry so the time was right. She has loved eating solid food and really hasn’t found one she doesn’t like yet! I wrote more about that here: http://www.thesplatteredapron.com/carolines-first-foods. As for tips for sleeping through the night….I really think we just got lucky. Caroline started sleeping in 5 hours stretches at 4 weeks (please don’t hate me for admitting that) and now she goes about 12 hours. That isn’t to say that some nights haven’t been a struggle of sleeping and waking, we have certainly had our fair share but now she has developed very good habits. We did have to let her cry it out for two nights, which worked for us. It was hard, but it worked. We knock on wood and thank our lucky stars every day! If you have more specific questions please feel free to e-mail me, I’m happy to tell you about our experience, though I am no expert.

Happy 1/2 a year birthday to your sweet Caroline! You keep mentioning that she's not the best napper. My Camille is 10 weeks old and while she's a great night sleeper (8-11 hours at a stretch), she only catnaps during the day. Do you just keep hoping Caroline will start taking longer naps, or do you have a plan? Just curious, because I'd love for Camille to take longer than a 45 minute nap (outside of the car or stroller). =)

Thank you! We just hope she’ll take longer naps. I know, really proactive parenting, right? She does nap, just not for long stretches of time. So she is getting the rest that she needs, it just isn’t the rest that the books say she should be getting. If she were always cranky and fussy I would worry, but she isn’t, she’s a happy baby. I mentioned it to her doctor today and she wasn’t concerned. Things change every day so who knows, you could ask me next week and I’ll tell you she’s taking 2 good naps a day. For your daughter, I would say she’s still a newborn, don’t worry too much just enjoy holding that little peanut as much as you can. I’m not that far ahead of you and I think it goes WAY too fast!!

This is the best age isn’t it?? Cassidy just started saying dadada yesterday (just a babble not to my husband yet) and I just can’t get enough of that sweet sound!

Caroline is saying dadadada too and our nanny is trying to convince me that she’s talking :-)
