Caroline has been eating solid food for almost six months and she has not yet found a food that she doesn’t like. I’ve been having a lot of fun putting together different flavor and texture combinations for her to experience. This combination is not at all revolutionary, but it came about because I was thinking how on hot days, it’s so nice to have a cool and refreshing snack. A smoothie is the perfect pick me up for a hot afternoon {unless we’re talking self-serve frozen yogurt. Nothing beats that.} So I made some frozen smoothie bites for Caroline.
It couldn’t be easier.
Step 1: put ingredients of choice into a blender. I went with organic whole milk yogurt {approximately 1/2 to 3/4 cup}, a banana and a mango.
Step 2: blend until smooth.
Step 3: pour into ice cube trays.
Step 4: freeze overnight.
Step 5: cut the ice cube in half and serve in a mesh feeder. {The cutting in half is only necessary to get it to fit inside the mesh feeder.}
While Caroline loved it, I think she ate it a little too fast at first and ended up with a bit of brain freeze. She kept going back for more, so I would say they were a hit, and for only 5 minutes of effort!
What’s your favorite smoothie combination?
Have you made any fun food for your baby lately?

Hi Lisa – What a great idea! I keep thinking about getting one of those mesh feeders, but I think I’m sold. I just reread your post about starting Caroline on solid foods. My daughter Camille (6 months old) just started solids last week, with brown rice cereal, and I stirred in apricots this week. Did you continue to feed Caroline cereal/oatmeal along with fruits and vegetables? Any other solids tips you’d offer? I’m still trying to figure it all out, without stressing either of us out. “Under one, just for fun,” right? Thanks for your blog. I really enjoy it!
Hi Laura, thanks so much for your kind words! Yes, we continue to give Caroline oatmeal. We stopped giving her rice cereal after 2 weeks. For breakfast, she typically has oatmeal with some fruit either stirred in or on the side. I like the mesh feeders for food that is kind of slippery, like bananas and avocados, it’s easier for her to manage with it. Though sometimes she will eat small pieces of avocado with chicken–the chicken sticks to the avocado and makes it easier to pick up. My tips would depend on how you want to feed Camille–do you want her to be able to feed herself or do you want to continue with purees?
I love that last picture of her sucking away! We had one of those mesh feeders, but never actually used it. Great ideas- we make smoothies almost daily, and now it’s a great way to get spinach and carrots into her (she’s 2)- usually with berries, banana and yogurt. I like it, too!

My husband and I love smoothies too, I’m looking forward to Caroline sharing the ones we have with us eventually!
when my baby (who is now 4) was that age, he loved sucking on frozen pureed fruits, a bit messy, but totally worth it! He still loves smoothies
