Before I get into the nursery update, can you believe this weather?? It is so ridiculously hot that I haven’t cooked a meal in a few days. I’m sorry I don’t have any recipes to share, but hopefully I’ll get back in the kitchen soon!
When Jeromy painted the room, we realized that the room would look a lot more polished with crown molding. We plan to do crown molding around the first floor, so it made perfect sense to add it to the baby’s room now. So off Jeromy went to buy the crown molding! He then gave the crown molding a coat of white paint.
After a few nights of struggling to get the corner angles just right, we finally finished hanging the molding {and when I say we, I do mean we, I held it up while Jeromy nailed it in. For every 20 minutes of work Jeromy did, I did about 30 seconds
}
The results are fantastic!
It just gives the room a nice, polished look. Despite the bare walls—I’m working on things to hang. The baby won’t be sleeping in her room at first so we’re okay if it’s not perfectly ready. Had we not moved when I was 6.5 months pregnant, I’m sure we’d be a lot closer to done right now!
Moving on to storage, one thing I’ve learned from Young House Love is use what you have. When we moved into our new house, we had several different things that we used in our townhouse that we didn’t necessarily need to use in our new house. So I repurposed a lot of pieces in our baby girl’s room.
First, the bureau. Jeromy literally found this bureau on the side of the road years ago, took it home and refinished it. Even though it is a different wood than the crib, the stain is the same color so they still go well together.
We knew that we didn’t want to get a separate changing table, so we’re using the top of the bureau with a changing pad.
The basket right next to the changing pad I’ve had for years, I used to use it to store things in the bathroom so that they’d be easily accessible. In this house, we have 2 large medicine cabinets and 2 deep drawers, so I didn’t need this basket anymore. My mom sewed a new liner to coordinate with the fabric in the crib skirt, curtains and quilt she’s making for our baby girl. Inside I stashed things we’d need for changing—wipes container, Desitin, baby powder and baby lotion.
The lamp and lampshade we already had and were not using either. The lamp base is from Pottery Barn and it was pretty much one of the nicest things I had in my first apartment, courtesy of my parents. I replaced the old lampshade that was pretty beaten up from several moves with this white one and I love the clean lines. Right now the lamp only turns on and off, but Jeromy is going to replace the circuit so we can turn on a soft light for middle of the night diaper changes. We opted to buy the Diaper Dekor for our diaper pail because it takes regular garbage bags—we don’t have to spend extra money on expensive inserts!
Finally, we received that small pink basket as part of a baby gift, so I’ve put a few pacifiers in it for easy access.
In the far corner that’s hidden by the crib, I put what used to be my clothes hamper to hold all of the blankets the baby has received.
It has a cloth liner which I washed first, of course. We also have her Bumbo and play mat stored in that corner. Eventually there will be shelves above this spot next to the window.
Next to the closet we put my set of wicker drawers. I bought this in 2005 from Pier One when I was living with a friend in Arlington and needed a bit more storage.
Later it housed my craft supplies, but now that I have a craft room with my supplies stashed in plastic drawers {which we also had already} under a bed, this was empty to use for the baby.
In it, we have bibs and burp clothes, toys, blankets and some keepsakes from my baby showers. There are still 2 drawers that are empty which is fantastic.
And as you can see above, we have her bathtub hanging on the back of the door. We will eventually replace the hardware on the back of the door with silver that matches the crib and bureau—I have no idea why one of the previous owners put a brass bar with a silver door handle.
The basket holding stuffed animals used to sit on our kitchen table, but now that we can actually use our kitchen table, a fruit bowl has replaced it.
Finally, I needed some storage in her closet.
I had a HUGE closet in our townhouse and I used these bins to store all sorts of things—clothes, craft stuff, photos and workout gear. IN our new house, my closet is significantly smaller and all of these bins, except for 2, have found new uses. This one is holding all of the baby’s linens, crib sheets, towels, wash clothes, changing pad covers and a pillowcase for the Boppy. I decided to store it on the floor next to her laundry basket so that in the middle of the night if i need to change a crib sheet I can just reach down and not worry about taking a bin down from the shelf above.
I can’t wait for this room to be done so I can show a complete nursery reveal. I think we’ve figured out ways to save money without sacrificing function or style. Though let’s use the word style loosely, I don’t think we’re candidates for HGTV Design Star

Such GREAT ideas! And the nursery looks so great already.
I didn't even notice the bare walls because it looks well put together. Although, then again, that's coming from someone who still has bare walls in her 6 month old baby boy's room. LOL
Thanks, Tina!! The decorations will come eventually
Can Jeromy come to our house and put up crown molding? K, thanks.
He says if you want to see that type of comedy, go to the Improv
The crown molding looks great. I personally feel it gives a polished n neat look to any room.
The nursery looks very functional apart from looking good.
Thank you so much!
It looks fantastic! Love how fresh the crown moulding looks!
Thanks, Emily!
