I re-read the post I put up last week that said we were going to eat through the contents of our pantry, fridge and freezer before buying groceries again. And I mentioned it to Jeromy. Then I realized that it was just not entirely realistic. In the process of figuring out what to make this week, I planned our menu around what we had on hand, hung the menu on the fridge and made a list of what I needed to buy.
So here’s the plan:
Sunday: Orange pork chops with leftover vegetables {pork chops were in the freezer from Polyface Farm)
Monday: Chicken coconut stir fry {veggies from last week’s Green Grocer delivery, bought the chicken today}
Tuesday: beef tacos {ground beef in the freezer from Polyface Farm}
Wednesday: I’m going out to dinner with a friend, so Jeromy will eat leftovers
Thursday: Italian chicken sausage lasagna {sausage from the freezer, pasta in the pantry}
Friday: Shrimp or fish {I always buy seafood the same day so this is TBD}
Prepared for lunches: arugula and beet salad, leftovers and mushroom soup.
Here’s what $77.82 in groceries from Safeway looks like:
We receive a small organic box of produce once a week on Wednesdays from Washington’s Green Grocer, which is $37. This is what we had this week: Green Cabbage, Broccoli, Arugula, Fingerling Potatoes, Carrots, Beets with tops, Shitake Mushrooms, Gala Apples, Ruby Red Grapefruit, Bananas, Navel Oranges, Kiwi.
Today at Safeway I bought: Raisin Bran, Puffins, 3 containers of plain, nonfat Greek yogurt, 8 bottles of Gatorade {on sale for $1 each}, 28 oz. can crushed tomatoes, cream cheese, sour cream, limeade, lemonade, orange juice, 6 whole wheat bagels, chicken tenders, 3 bananas, 400 grams of mushrooms {button, cremini and porcini}, thyme, mint and oregano.
Total for the week {so far}: $114.82
In about another month we’ll be able to get all of our fresh herbs from our herb container garden on our deck!
I plan to share with you our menu, groceries and costs weekly going forward. I started this blog to show that cooking does not have to be intimidating and that it can be fun, I don’t intend for this blog to become a record of what I eat. Hopefully this exercise will show you that it’s more economical, and dare I say fun, to cook at home more frequently than eat out at restaurants.
